ESTERO, Fla. - Golf Magazine has named Old Corkscrew Golf Club to its list of "Best Courses Near You." It is the magazine's first ever ranking of the best courses you can play in every state. The list includes 30 courses in Florida, but only two courses from Southwest Florida made the list: Old Corkscrew and Tiburon.
"This recognition from Golf Magazine is a terrific honor," said Mark Iwinski, manager of golf operations for Old Corkscrew Golf Club. "Old Corkscrew is a spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature design course with beautiful vistas of lakes and nature preserves. What makes this course so special is that there are no residential homes surrounding the course, so the golf experience is incredibly serene."
Golf Magazine's list of "Best Courses Near You" is an adjunct to their annual list of the Top 100 Courses in the World and is published in their September issue, now on newsstands. The rankings were guided by a panel of 100 golfers who include major-championship winners, Ryder Cup players, architects, leading amateurs, journalists and other golf enthusiasts. Ranking criteria included how a course tests the full range of skills, design rhythm, variety, setting and conditioning, among others.
"Credit for this honor needs to be given to our extraordinary staff whose enthusiasm and commitment keeps the course in tournament condition everyday and provides an exceptional round of golf to our members and visitors," said Iwinski.
Old Corkscrew is an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature design golf course located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida on 275-acre magnificently wooded acres. Crushed shell and pine straw cart paths wind around contoured fairways, a restored flowway, and lush greens. The course is carved from the natural terrain of native oaks, towering slash pines and surrounding native vegetation. The undulating greens rise 10 to 20 feet above the fairways, creating stunning and serene vistas of adjacent farmlands. The par-72 championship golf course is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida, which is the highest standard of design offered by Nicklaus Design and includes Jack Nicklaus' personal oversight and involvement in every step of the design and construction. "As with all Nicklaus Design courses, it is distinctive, demanding and definitely unforgettable," said Iwinski.
A number of special recognitions have been bestowed on Old Corkscrew since opening in February 2007. The National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) named Old Corkscrew its 2008 Florida Course of the Year and in December Golf Digest magazine placed Old Corkscrew Golf on its prestigious list of America's Best New Courses. The golf club received its Silver Signature Sanctuary designation from Audubon International in 2007. Audubon International certifies golf courses that are planned, constructed, and managed with a significant focus on environmental quality and sustainability.
Mike Calbot's International Golf Studio and TRIAD Golf Schools relocated to Old Corkscrew earlier this year. Calbot has more than 38 years of experience and has been teaching Southwest Floridians how to improve their golf game since 1978.
