Arrowhead Golf Club:Lewis Gem Stresses Low-Stress Playability

Arrowhead Golf Club, Naples, FlUndulating fairways, multi-tiered greens, water on each hole but still a consistently excellent pace-of-play are the hallmarks of Arrowhead Golf Club. Voted Naples “Best Public Golf Course 2005” by the readers of the Naples Daily News.

Located just east of I-75 off Immokalee Rd. in northeast Naples, Arrowhead, which opened in 1998, is growing into its Gordon Lewis design, offering up his signature spacious landing areas and forgiving collection areas around oversized greens (averaging 10,000 square-feet). Players at Arrowhead have to navigate over and around 16 lakes, and water is in play on all 18 holes, but most of the hazards are lateral and you’ve got to seek it out to find real trouble.

“Playability” might be Arrowhead’s theme. With four sets of tees measuring from 4,700 yards back to over 6,800, golfers can find just enough course to challenge them, without beating them up. The championship tees that measure 6,832 yards have a solid course rating of 73.4 and a challenging slope of 132, but if that’s a little too much challenge, the blue tees measuring just over 6,000 yards have a slope of 118. The third hole is a rare (for Florida) double-dogleg par-4 while the seventh is a tantalizingly short par-4 that at 292 yards from the tips, almost dares you to swing from the heels and try to drive it.

Arrowhead is proud of its par-5s, the 596-yard (from the tips) first hole is also the course’s toughest, with two of the other three par-5s included in the toughest half of the holes. The 18th hole, though, is a reachable par-5 measuring under 500-yards from the tips and “only” 446 from the blue tees, teasing you to chase birdie or eagle to wrap up an ideal round.

To toast your successes or drown your sorrows, Arrowhead features a full-service restaurant and bar. There’s also an award-winning pro shop, club-fitting and game-improvement lessons from General Manager and Head Pro Mike Dopslaff through his Arrowhead Golf Academy.
